German archaeologist, excavator of Troy. Mostly known for his publications on Troy, Orchomenos and Mycenae. A 1-1/4 page letter, written in English to the classical scholar (Carl) Werner, entirely in his hand, on blue squared paper, signed "H. Schliemann," Athens, 9 February 1882. The letter is stamped at the head with the date receipt (28 Feb. 82) by the publisher Gustav W. Seitz of Wandsbeck. Schliemann writes: "I would have undertaken with the very greatest pleasure to write the preface to your new important work (on Athens)...but unfortunately you apply to me too late, for in a fortnight hence I have to resume the exploration of the Troad, which will occupy me till next autumn..."
From the collection of Henry M. Blackmer together with the frontisportrait of Schliemann from C.Schuchhardt's work "Schliemann's Excavations" (London, 1891), loosely fitted into an envelope annotated by Blackmer, describing in his hand the letter and affixed with his bookplate at the front of the envelope. Very scarce with Troy reference and provenance.
