English classical historian, most noted for his twelve-volume "History of Greece." A two and a half-page letter entirely in his hand, (London), June 28, n.d., to H. Reeve. He writes in part: "I beg to return you my best acknowledgments for your translation of a work which I so much esteem as M. Tocqueville's treatise on American Democracy." Signed "Geo. Grote." Lower left corner clipped, affecting one word only. Very scarce.
