SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY CHAMPOLLION

CHAMPOLLION, JEAN FRANCOIS. (1790-1832). Decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphics. Autographed Letter Signed ("j.f. Champollion lejeu").  Half-page, quarto, with integral address leaf (Paris, ca.1830).  To the naturalist Dureau de la Malle regretting a previous engagement preventing him from seeing Cuvier. (Small seal tear, very lightly browned, otherwise in excellent condition).  (New Item).

Letters of Champollion are extremely rare.

SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY LAYARD

LAYARD, AUSTEN HENRY.  (1817-1894). Author and excavator of Nineveh. A 2 pp. Autographed Letter Signed "A.H. Layard," on his 'British Embassy, Constantinople' stationery, 12mo, dated 1 April 1877, in French, to an unknown correspondent, regarding an ivory plaque, which had recently been stolen from the British Museum. (Item 2473).

Though Layard letters of a political or social content are easily found, a letter discussing an object found at Nimrud is extremely rare. Not published in Layard's Autobiography and Letters. In fine condition.
